WHAT PRICE WASTE DISPOSAL? |
businesses to recycle their waste and certainly little incentive for businesses to pay extra for the privilege. Wychavon provides commercial waste collection for 900 businesses the rest use private contractors.
So what can we do? VECTA are keen to encourage businesses to do as much as possible to promote greener waste disposal and reducing the amount going to landfill and we will put pressure on the Government and Local Authorities to do their part to help businesses to reduce landfill and increase recycling rates.
In the meantime – why don’t you ask your waste contractor what recycling services they might be able to provide?

If you were to ask any householder in Wychavon what is the biggest service their council tax pays for most if not all, would answer waste collection. We do actually get a lot more than that for our council tax, but it’s a resident perception.
But what do businesses see as the main service received from the payment of business rates? I doubt there would be a deafening cry giving a long list of benefits. Business rates are channelled into a central Government "pot", and redistributed to local authorities. So how do you benefit? And why don’t these rates pay for your commercial waste to be collected and disposed of?

FLOOD RECOVERY
Clearance and recovery work is well underway in most areas after the devastation of the July floods. Ten flood stricken businesses in Port St and Waterside have now reopened, with two
having moved to new premises. Of the twenty that remain closed, only one has no work in
progress. Similar work has started at Avon Caravan Park, while all the badly affected businesses on Blackminster Business Park have now reopened, and with the addition of two new units.

Insurance has funded the repairs at most of Evesham’s flooded business premises,
supplemented by VECTA grants.
Since being flooded, Gems Stems in Port St. has been trading from a 20 year old former refrigerated unit, 40 feet in length, located at the rear of Vale Cycles. The shop has now been dried and cleared of debris, and owners Charlie & Gemma hope to reopen there before |
Christmas. Olivino Restaurant in Port St sustained about £100k of damage. It took one and a half months to clear and dry the restaurant, after which refitting began. Happily, the restaurant reopened in mid November, and continues to have great support from their regular customers.
Port Street’s Cotswold Trichology Centre suffered about £4k worth of damage after being under three feet of water. Proprietor Sally-Ann Tarver operated from a nearby hairdresser salon while her clinic was cleared, dried, and refitted. Like Olivino, Sally re-opened in mid November.

These are just a few of the businesses that have had to deal with the traumatic aftermath of heavy flooding and loss of business. However, we have witnessed mainly optimism amongst those affected, and the people of Evesham appear to be giving their customer support to this part of town. In the long term, any enhancement scheme for Port St will need to incorporate improved flood defences. In the meantime, it looks like a New Beginning for Port St. and Waterside ! |
